Build Your Own Aleutian Sea Kayak

Build an iqyax, the traditional skin-on-frame sea kayak of the Unangax people of the Aleutian Islands. Students will use the measurements of their own body to create a tailor fitted ocean craft that is ultra-light, super tough, seaworthy, and unsurpassed for agility. Instructor, Marc Daniels, has worked and studied traditional iqyax building with Alaska's Unangax people since 1993, and enjoys sharing what he's learned there.

Aleutian Islands Paddle Carving

The Unangax People of the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands of Alaska developed a very unique and high performance paddle for propelling their super agile sea kayaks. Come learn about these exquisite paddles and carve one for yourself from beautiful Alaska yellow cedar. Led by Marc Daniels who learned traditional paddle design in the Aleutians and through studying museum specimens. All tools and materials supplied.

Father (or Mother)-Daughter Kayak Building

This is a fun way for parents and daughters to deepen their connection and to re-connect while engaging their minds, hearts, and hands. Set to take place during Spring break week. Come to our shop in the Victorian Village of Ferndale and build a genuine Greenland sea qajaq (kayak)alongside other parent-daughter student pairs. Each pair goes home with a fitted qajaq plus meaningful and lasting memories!

Manos: Artist Reception

Collaborative works by Brian De La Cerda (resident artist of the Mind's Eye Manufactory) & Natalia Rico, ranging ceramic and wood sculpture, to medium format film photography, will be kicking off a small, but meaningful three month exhibition at the Mind's Eye Manufactory and Coffee Lounge.

We will also be hosting a wonderful contigent of HSU AcroYoga performers who begin moving at 8pm. And if it couldn't get any more artsy, Darren Weiss of KHUM's - The Chicken Scratch- will be on hand with a gang of super talented musicians to get us through the night!

Greenland Qayaq Building with Maligiaq Padilla

Learn Greenland qajaq building from Greenland Inuit and ten-time Greenland National Qajaq Champion, Maligiaq Padilla, with assistance from Marc Daniels of True North Skin Boats.
In this intensive workshop you'll make your own tailor-fitted, high performance Greenland sea qajaq based upon the measurements of your body. Maligiaq learned his building techniques from Greenland Inuit elders and enjoys sharing this knowledge with others.
This is an extremely rare opportunity to learn this ancient craft from two important figures in the world of traditional skin-on-frame boatbuilding.
